The nearest village is within five minutes walk, which is the beautiful whitewashed village of Canillas de Albaida; sleepy and unspoilt would be a good description. Geographically Canillas is 576 meters above sea-level, is south facing and is the most northerly point of the area, at the foot of the Almijara Mountains. Only 20 kilometres from the coast where there are a number of popular resorts, Nerja and Torre del Mar are well worth visiting. Canillas is a labyrinth of narrow streets and you will find all the amenities that you require, bank, general store, pharmacy, butchers, hairdresser, restaurants, etc. you will find the locals helpful and friendly. Here is the ideal starting point for both serious hikers or for those who just want a 30-min stroll.
Walk the other direction from Nispero and in 15-min you will find yourself in the quiet but slightly more touristy village of Cómpeta; here you will be able to sample their own wine, have a drink in the square and watch the world go by. Cómpeta has a market on Saturday and many superb restaurants, bars and shops, if you want peace and quiet with every amenity, then you will need to go no further. There are two roads down to the coast from Còmpeta both are spectacular drives and will take about 30-min, one will take you down to Torre del Mar where there is a lovely beach and promenade, a wealth of restaurants, bars, shops and night life. Take the other route and you will find Torrox another stylish resort where you can spend the day on the beach and eat in the fine restaurants. A little further along the road there is what is described as the jewel of the Costa del Sol “Nerja” visit the caves, discovered only in recent years or if you are a shop-a-holic welcome to paradise! In this coastal area there are two golf courses and a water park and lots more to see. Driving north from the coast takes you to the historical city of Granada, the Alhambra is well worth a visit, and it is in this area where the more adventurous go skiing. Seville is a beautiful cosmopolitan city with lime tree avenues, designer shops, chic pavement cafes and a great place to get a hair cut! However you will have to be up and off early as it is a long but scenic 3-hour drive. Robert and Jean are still in the very pleasurable process of researching this area so we will keep updating the information as and when we find places of interest.
